Full Version: HTC TyTN II + MacBook Pro + Bluetooth + GPRS/3G

After some search on the web and going through one big round of unnecessary configurations, I've managed to make it work altogether, i.e. Using my MacBook Pro to get Internet connections (GPRS/3G) via Bluetooth to HTC TyTN II.

1ST STEP
Bluetooth pair TyTN II & Mac.
On Mac, under Bluetooth icon, select "Set up Bluetooth Device". Go through the wizard until it finishes pairing.
Then UNCHECK "Access the Internet with your phone's data connection" and click continue. (As this step is totally unnecessary)

At the end of the wizard, you'll see
Your computer and mobile phone were configured with the following services:
Use as a personal area network.

2ND STEP
On TyTN II, go the Comm Manager, click "Internet Sharing".
Under PC Connection, select "Bluetooth PAN", choose your Network Connection (the one with GPRS/3G). Click Connect.
Notice the status shows: Device setup finished. On the PC, connect Bluetooth PAN.

3RD STEP
On Mac, under Bluetooth icon, select "Join Network on XXX". And voila grin.gif
TyTN II's Internet Sharing status will reflect "Connected".
You may start to surf/email on your Mac.

To disconnect - On Mac, under Bluetooth icon, select "Disconnect from XXX". And voila again grin.gif

Sorry, didn't try USB as it's usually more difficult to get bluetooth to work (as in the case of ActiveSync), so my opinion is if bluetooth works, USB should work flawlessly too.

*Just an excuse to get my lazy bum to test out the USB option grin.gif *

Please can someone help with this I've had my tytn for 12 hours and I have spent 12 hours trying to get this to work, i use it for work so I have to get it going. I have followed literally a dozen different instructions including those sent to me by Vodafone, I am finding that as I run leopard on my macbook this is a problem when following instructions because it's a relatively new OS most instructions seem to follow options you got in Tiger or older. anyway I have paired my device to my macbook and I didn't even get the option of "acces internet with your phones data connetion" or dial up networking which I got with my palm Treo 750v. I followed th e above instructions and finally got to the point where I can connect to the network created by my phone BUT from what I can see all I need to do now is open firefox and it will connect and I can browse away......well errrr NO I can't connect to anything. Is there a setting I need to make in my bluetooth options re- the vodafone connection as in the connection number / username/password on my mac and do I need to select a driver/modem script ?? I have installed everything from generic 3G's to windows script to iPAQ to HTC_TyTN script as recomended in other forums but nothing works I am at a total loss to why this won't work. For my Treo (which was WM6) I just turned the BT on clicked connect to BT on my mac and I was away, the network prefernces on the BT settings were the specified Vodafone ones - telephone number "internet" user and password both "web"
and bish bosh it worked.

Are you able to connect to the Internet on your TyTN itself, i.e. surf the web, check emails on TyTN?

Fyi, I've tested the above method for all 3 Telcos (red, orange, green) and it worked great.

Thanks for the reply, yes the first thing I did was connect to the internet on the phone and set up two of my email accounts on the phone, everything works great.
I don't understand why my old Treo 750v (WM6) connected perfectly as a dialup networking modem over bluetooth on my mac (leopard) and ran at pretty decent speeds BTW. And yet this phone refuses to show any services other than personal network which once the two are connected together does absolutely nothing. I discovered I have yet another issue last night, I am a photographer and sometimes using a laptop is difficult so I use a Dell Axim PDA which has a compact flash card port for my camera's CF card and I run photo editing software on it to basically do the same as my laptop but on a smaller lighter scale. problem is that the tytn doesn't work as a dial up modem with that either, I got the internet sharing going and got the Dell to connect to the network but then nothing AGAIN no shared internet connection. I have 14 days before I'm stuck with this phone at the moment I am wondering if despite the glitches I had with the updated Treo maybe it was a better phone for what I need????
I hope not because the Tytn is a good device in itself.

Yes, TyTN is a great device except the physical size :-(

Anyway, perhaps you wish to try it on another Mac or give HTC a call.....

Fyi, I'm using it with Leopard as well (previously tested with Tiger and it works fine too).
novatliz
yup it works fine with tiger here

Works like a charm on my QTEK 9000 (aka HTC Universal) running WM 6.1

Great tutorial

From what i've seen, looks harder to have an iphone sharing an internet connection to a MacBook Pro than an ppc running windows. It doesn't make sense but i believe it's the true confused.gif

Anyone managed a solution for a usb connection?

On network preferences on the mac we don't have an option for usb

But probably wouldn't make much of a diference between using bluetooth data connection only for data and usb for charging the ppc OR having a solution for USB data and charging connection

On any case we will be allways charging the ppc trough the battery of the laptop blink.gif
