Found a way to do it

maybe just plain lucky

just copy paste your mp3 and midi files in your memory card folder (at root, don't put in sub folder)

Then when going to sound settings / notifications, the name of the song will be availabl.e..

Actually, the standard folder for tones is "\Windows\" and the standard folder for ringtones is "\Windows\Rings\".

Yes, in WM5 MP3 rings work from the memory card root. And unlike WM2003 it won't default back to Windows Ring when you least expect it because the card reader almost never sleeps. You'll eat battery like no tomorrow, tho - Windows\Rings is still the way to go.

Only WAV encoded files can be used for SMS's by default, and you can only change Incoming Message directly.
