Full Version: controling your winxp via ppc terminal service
PPCSG > Power Up Your Devices > Tips & Tricks
trgsp2
ok i'm not so smart as to come up with a guide.. please read this GUIDE on how to set up both your win xp and also your ppc in order to access your windows from your ppc...

yesterday i gave it a try and i must say ITS COOL! one of the most amazing things i did with my ppc so far i must say...can TOTALLY control my home pc from my ppc...even when i'm outside of home...speed may be a bit laggy but u can run your ms word/powerpoint/bittorrent client/internet explorer basically ANYTHING on your winxp pc remotely on your ppc...

other than taking note of the steps in the guide take note of the following when u set up :
1. to connect to your own pc..u need to know your pc's ip address...this can be found by (from your pc) goto www.showmyip.com which will show your ip address...do it before u leave your house and store this ip address to your ppc.. normal broadband users like us usually have a dynamic ip address...changes from time to time...so u need to take note of your ip address changes if not u wun be able to access your home pc..(this coming holidays i intend to write something which will solve this problem..idea is to make your home pc periodically...like hourly...send its current ip address to a password secured web server...then when u are outside..if u dunna your pc''s new dynamic ip...just log onto that webserver to retrieve the ip then u can do your terminal service... grin.gif)

2. if u using router u need to do a "port translation"to prevent your router from blocking your attempt to access your computer remotely...do a port translation for port 3889 for terminal service..on my speedtouch router modem this is what i did: type 10.0.138 on my browser which brings me to the router configuration page...goto the NAPT (stands for some thign somethign Port Translation...hehe) and map the external 3889 port to your internal 3889 port... this is a potentially difficult step for people who have NEVER seen their router configuration page... do a search on your own router's confiuration for more info...this step also potentiall open your computer to malicious hackers if your windows accounts on your pc are not passworded properly (like leaving your admistrator acct's password BLANK!) but i tried on mine and no one hack la...so don't worry grin.gif

3. before leaving house make sure u change your pc to the login screen...either do a logout or do a change user...lidat then remotely can access without the need of any input on your home pc...u try and u will understand...

possible applications are :

1. left your home desktop to download stuff and u go orchard road shopping...aft a few hours most prob the dl finished but your computer is still on...u goto mac...use terminal service client to check on your download progress...if its done...shutdown your pc remotely to save electricity!

2. u're an angineer with a heavy laptop...don't like to drag your heavy laptop around yet want access to your engineering softwares on the go? just bring your ppc and use wifi spots to access to your home pc...run watever simulations u need via the remote client service

3.can't nudge your friend in msn using your ppc's msn? hehe...use your ppc go access your home computer's msn messenger and logon remotely to your home pc's msn.. then from there u not only can nudge your friend...u can send winks files contacts..from your ppc..via terminal service client ...through your home pc ..and to your friend

4. u're outside but need to send a document in your home pc harddisk to your boss? if not he'll FIRE you? i htink the application is obvious in this case...hehe...

if u wanna push your ppc to the limits of amazing urself u must further use this software from vijay555 fullscreen TSC i was like what THE?!?!? i can REALLY use my pc from my ppc!!!

then again...the advantage of VGA ppcs is well proven by this application...qvga users gotta live with the small screen of the terminal service..no choice lor...

(I'm not sure if anyone posted any guide on how this works but my search in the forums gave no related articles...bros did mention about their use of the terminal service client thingy but no one gave me any guide on how to make it work on in win xp...time for me to contribute i guess grin.gif)

hi trgsp2

tried login but unsuccessful on three occasion
Error pops out
“The Terminal server ended the connection or a network error occurred. please try to reconnect”
Also fail to locate any Port Translation related folder in the router

Wonder, thanks in advance
chrono
Sounds cool. Will try it later tonite.. =)
benedict888
well...
i didnt use it often...
because i find that...after using that,
1. my desktop computer colours got downgrade to 65K (i presume), to suit my P50 screen?
2. and it mess up all my desktop icons, to fit the smaller screen (i assume again)...arggh...haha

ya...its pretty impressive to show to others...keke

and to add on to it,
u can wake up your computer using wifi from your PPC. that's what i do...
1. u need a software of because... i use Z2 pocketlan
2. u need to go to your desktop computer BIOS and enable "Wake on LAN" kind of option

yeah...
u can now ON and OFF your computer remotely!~
cheers
trgsp2
oops...didn't check this thread for few days...hehe...sorry for the delayed reply..

bengteck>> on your ppc what screen did u see? the blue screen where u can type in your user name password? or u didn't see that screen at all?
1. if u haven seen that screen and u already get that error msg “The Terminal server ended the connection or a network error occurred. please try to reconnect” it may be because
(A).u never allow remote control in the first place on your xp computer... on your xp computer goto controlpanel>>system>>remote>> and make sure your "allow users to connect remotely" is checked...then try again...
(B). you haven done your network port translation yet or u got your IP address wrong...for ip address goto www.showmyip.com....and if it still doesn't work and if u dunna how to configure your router's internal to external port translations mebbe you wanna post the model of your router here...some routers don't allow port translations...other are hard to translate...i got an ez router to configure so it works ez...you post your router model.. experienced bros will help you out...i'm not pro at this but can try some search for u if i know your router model... grin.gif
2. if you saw that blue screen for login and u get that msg while trying to login it means someone at the xp computer is using it and rejected your attempt to remote connect! haha...mebbe your sister decided to stop u from trying anything funny... hehe ...

benedict>> for your problem of messing up of the desktop settings i got a suggestion: just create a new windows user (goto xp computer's controlpanel>>user accounts>> to create) and when connecting to your pc remotely login to this new user account instead of your old usual account...in this way watever messes up your desktop is inside your new account...at home when u login to your old account everythign will be intact...

and also..you wanna put up a more detailed steps on how to fix up the wake on lan? sounds really cool! please teach!! like where to dl the software...configurations and stuff... i wanna learn how to do it too hehe...add that in and this will really be a one stop guide for people who wanna mobile access their home pc via ppc... grin.gif
benedict888
Hi there

thanks for your suggestion...

anyway i am quite tied up these days...will give a brief explanation for the Wake On Lan thing...

1. u need a PPC software
http://www.cam.com/vxutil_pers.html
(chance upon this freeware...haven't use it personally...but as long as there is Wake On Lan i guess it will work) I am using Z2 PocketLan
2. restart your computer...hit "Del" or "Esc" (depending on your computer), to enter into the BIOS setting...
3. Search for your Wake On Lan (oh ya...some motherboards don't support this feature...look for your motherboard manual if need be) and enable it. then exit and save your settings
4. shut down your computer? (to test waking it up using Wifi..hee)
5. leaving the power mains of your computer and router (or/and modem) ON.
6. connect your PPC to wifi
7. launch the PPC program and Wake On Lan...the name/ IP address should be your computer one...

its quite simple as you can perform Terminal Services Client...so u should have no hindering problem in connections; and also the tech knowledge...hee

let me know if there is any issues...have fun!~
cheers
:)

bengteck
thanks for the detail explanation, i've done all you've described

I'm using Linksys WRT54G and WRT54GC on two sites

btw i've reach the blue screen yet

-----------------------------------------

I've found thso DMZ under Applications & Gaming

The DMZ hosting feature allows one local user to be exposed to the Internet for use of a special-purpose service such as Internet gaming or videoconferencing. DMZ hosting forwards all the ports at the same time to one PC.

Or should i use Port Range Forwarding?

trgsp2
benedict>> I got no wake on lan for my computer :( boo! but then just a qns...wake on lan works if your wireless card is on board right? how about USB WIFI adaptors? will they "wake"the computer through the usb connections as well? that's pretty darn amazing if it really works...sadly i can't try...

bengteck>>i think its port range forwarding... u can take a look at this page not sure if it helps...
http://www.portforward.com/english/routers.../BitTorrent.htm
its for bittorrent port forwarding for your router but the concept is the same i think...the range of ports put "from 3889 to 3889"... application slot i not too sure what to write for terminal service but i guess this name here doesn't matter...just for u to identify the setting...so u can just put "terminal_service" ...check the box at the end of the line and then try to save setting of your router(if there is such an obtion on the page...) restart your router and then see if the tsc works...

any bros with any experience with this router?

DO NOT READ ON IF U'RE COMFUSED ALREADY!
another way to test drive your ppc's terminal service client see if u like it or not without doing port translations (this part gets a bit confusing...i deviced this way myself..hAHA) BOTH your desktop and your ppc connect to your wifi router...then the ip address u set to your desktop computer's internal IP...if the webpage link above u can see that the internal IP of that computer is 192.168.1.0 where u'll be mapping your external ports to...bengteck your computer is most prob the same...this ip address 192.168.1.0..but diff brand of router will have diff default internal ip they give to the computers connected...eg see my screen shot my internal ip is 10.0.0.1..u can find your computer's internal ip on the port translation/forwarding config page...

if u like how u can use your pc on your ppc using this test drive method then go ahead and fix your port translations...if u don't like it alreadi...no need to go through the trouble of forwarding ports! hope this helps!

tankee531
great guide !

any difference in steps or configuration when accessing via wifi (hotspots) and GPRS/3G?

trgsp2
any form of internet access available for your ppc u can also do this i think... even via wifi hot spots or GPRS/3g... PROVIDED u know your dynamic home internet connection's IP...meaning before u go out from home u note down your IP address of your pc...but because usually internet connection IP address is dynamic ( unless u're on a business internet connection) it may change from time to time so if it changes the moment u step out of your house...too bad....

(don't advice u try this from GPRS tho...the lag plus the BILL will kill u...i test drive my BT GPRS transfered 1.3 MB and it costs me 6 bucks plus...its the most expensive 1.3 MB i ever downloaded man...darn)
bengteck
thanks, but i've to wait for my ipag return from repair first
before contiune with test

i understand your internal test drive method, good method to check the connection
before tackle the web connection.

cheers

PS - any OBD2 player here?

Hi there,

I couldn't get mine working.

But, I actually use Logmein.com to get access to my PC. I don't worry about IPs etc. But access via a browser on my D900.

I wonder if any of you use it?

sorry...haven't been checking this thread...

mm... so is it successful? yes? i guess.. since u are at the blue screen (suppose it is the login screen u mean?)

oh ya...i miss out that part on Port Forwarding..
yes.. u are using the same router as me...

go to IE goto 192.168.1.1 and login to your router...
under applications & Gaming --> Port Forwarding
manual addin any name u wish to call it eg. TSC
start~end port = 3389~3389
tick TCP
to IP address = 192.168.1.100 (your computer IP in your network)
and tick enabled

oops... sorry... haven't been checking this thread..

oh.. maybe you should check out for Wake On Lan function during your next motherboard upgrade :)
well... USB will cut off any power current when the computer is off (even mains are on), so i guess it wouldnt work

i am using built-in motherboard type of Lan...

oh ya...u explained the Port Forwarding... :)

oh yes... any form of connection... as long as it is able to connect internet
and ya... got to take down your IP address before u leave house... lol...

Hi benedict,

Yes, you have to activate Logmein from your PC first. Download, install, set passwords.

Then go to your PPC via wifi or gprs and access to logmein.com, it will bring you to a login screen for PDAs.

Enter your registered information and it will ask you to download a file to be installed on your PPC.

After installing you will click on a link to access your PC. Most likely there are TWO passwords. One is the password set by you and the other is the WinXP user password on your PC.

I can't remember all the steps...but it is something like that.

I used Pocket IE successfully, I've used it at McDonalds...no problem at all.

But I can't use Opera browser, don't know why.

Hope you manage to use it successfully.

It is a wonderful software for those without a dedicated IP add. wub.gif

Ummm...of course confused.gif , because unless someone at home can power up your system, no one can do it remotely right? Unless they have some remote control w00t.gif

As far as I know, your pc must be powered up and your logmein enabled. THAT DOES NOT mean it is online yet.

To get into your PC, there are two passwords, one the logmein and the other your PC's password.

Should be quite safe, unless you have trojan horses in your system?

Give me some feedback, because, I am using it quite often and if it is unsafe, please let me know!
