Apple announced the availability of Boot Camp, it is a software that allows the company's latest Macs with Intel Duo to run Windows XP by using a dual-boot technique akin to what Windows users have been using for years to load up other OSes, usually Linux or other versions of Windows. This was one of the best kept suprises that even Wall Street gave the thumbs up and Apple prices gained 10% on first day of the announcements. The public beta is being made available for free at Apple's website

Very interesting development indeed. Of course Apple is doing this for their own sake. For some consumers out there (like myself), if I have a choice of buying laptops or pcs of between Apple and other IBM compatible models, I'd choose Apple for the nice design (of course to spend a little more too).

So this is probably a very wise move by Apple in increasing sales and capitalisation of the market.

Wouldn't this be a perfect world if there is such thing called an Apple ppc? wub.gif

That was the Apple Newton. What I am referring to is a Apple Pocket PC, Pocket PC being a Microsoft OS, not of Apple's. Now that they are doing it with their pcs, I wonder if there will be Apple PDAs running on WM5. Let's keep dreaming.

Wow! The tide has turned a complete circle!
I remember the times where you ran emulator software on macs in order to run your favourite MS-DOS program and later when there were APPLE ][ emulators to run wavy navy etc on your IBM and compatibles. Who else out there remembers the creative cubic CT? Apple has always been in the forefront of creativity and invention. With the jumping over to Intel chips, it makes the new macs the most flexible pc around-win xp, os x, panther, linux, you name it....

will macs with intel chips running windows os be called wintel boxes? a couple of days ago, wintel and APPLE are mutually exclusive.

i like it that Apple is bringing the macs to the masses, but somehow i feel they are losing their product differentiater. Would the masses continue to pay big bucks for a chic mac that has very little room for expansion? I would think so. I used to build everyone of my desktop since my 386SX, but today, I simpily do not have the time nor inclination to do so anymore.

today, i just buy what i need and so next to no capacity planning. because by the time i want to upgrade components, APPLE would have came up with a new chic mac. what a great reason to go shopping at the apple center?!!!

For those thinking about installing BootCamp you will have to wait awhile as there has been conflicting reports of people using it, whereby once they switch over to Windows they cannot get back to Mac OS X and in other cases, their entire HDD gets a hard reset while installing Windows.

There are still bugs out there to be sorted out, so do take it easy and becareful. Just a heads up.

well Boot Camp is in Open Beta, so don't expect perfection...it will be ready more or less in the next installment of the Mac OS

although apple uses intel dual core cpu chips for their new machines
there are some software conflict issues which are not resolve yet
heating issues may still be present.
do hang on to your moolah 1st before committing
