With a small registry hack from the Net, my Dopod 838 is make Wi-Fi 11g/11b compatible, up from default 11b only configuration. Following are the result tested with local server:-
On Battery Saving mode, speed increases to 3/4Mbps from 1.5/2Mbps.
On Performance mode, speed increases to 12.5/14Mbps from 8/9Mbps.
Overall performance improve by 150% to 200%, still far from the theoretical 11g speed of 54Mbps but not bad for mobile device. Didn't notice any huge increase in battery consumption and the device seems to be cooler when the same amount of data was transferred.
Best of all, it can now connect to most wireless network without affecting the entire network, :)
To apply the hack, you can download a CAB file from the Net or add the following registry entry manually:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\TNETWLN1\parms]
"dot11SupportedRateMaskG"=DWORD:8

I've tried on my Dopod818, It works. Can see the connection is faster.
But I don't know if it'll conect to 11B automatically if G isn't available.

I found one "dot11SupportedRateMask" in my registry, do I modify the existing registry to "dot11SupportedRateMaskG" or add a new DWORD? By the way I'm using 818.

Heya discobug/Mamakap,
the method here is applicable only for resco explorer users:
1. Open Resco Explorer
2. Goto "My Registry"
3. as jshun has pointed out goto "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\TNETWLN1\Parms"
4. Create new Dword, by clicking on "Parms", then selecting "File\New\Dword Value"
5. Key in "dot11SupportedRateMaskG"
6. Under "Base", select the "Hex" Radio Button
7. Then type in 8 under "DWORD Data"
8. Select "Done"
and your done...
after getting out of resco, soft-reset... your new settings should work thereafter

Hey team,
Since the upgrade to Wi-Fi "G", I feel that the signal is much lower?
Anyone experience this?
In short, normally, I can access my internal quite stable from a weak room, a distance away from my Wi-Fi router.
But, after this update to "G", sometime, I can't even get to the www.mobile.ppcsg.com
Or this is just heavy traffic?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=38898Hi,
My dopod838Pro doesn't come with TNETWLN1\parms that mean I need to create 2 new key TNETWLN1\parms and with a dot11SupportedRateMaskG DWORD
correct if I'm wrong. if I'm not activate my wifi will this take up my battery life?

I've installed the file and the speed does seem noticeably faster. Thanks for this. But how do I know that I'm on "G" and not the default "B"? Any way I can check on my 838Pro? Would appreciate your guidance. Thanks.

Hihi
Can ask if this also works for the D810?

This is interesting. In my dopod 838 pro there is only the registry entry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TIACXWLN1\PARMS: dot11SupportedRateMask=1
It DOES NOT have this 'G' entry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TIACXWLN1\PARMS: dot11SupportedRateMaskG=8
But the phone is suppose to be b/g compatible.. so where is the G settings?
Also found out that the meanings of these parameters are:
"0",,"1,2 Mbps"
"1",,"1,2,5.5,11 Mbps"
"2",,"1,2,5.5,11,22 Mbps"
"3",,"Up to 18Mbps"
"4",,"Up to 24Mbps"
"5",,"Up to 36Mbps"
"6",,"Up to 48Mbps"
"7",,"Up to 54Mbps"
"8",,"All"
So does this mean with the original configuration in the registry the Dopod 838 pro only supports the 'b' standard with a max speed of 11Mbps. Does anyone with an original registry settings can confirm these values in their phones? Come.. lets share our settings on these 2 keys in the 838 pro and see if there are any differences in the phones we get.

Hi mamakap,
what is your dword value in the dot11SupportedRateMask?
(Note: it's without the 'G')

mamakap,
For your 818 you will need to add a new DWORD - dot11SupportedRateMaskG to enable the G compatibility. The decimal value of this parameter depends on the rate that you plan to support. Some people suggested the value = 8 which from my previous post means you support all the speeds up to 54Mbps. However since the hardware in 818pro may not be able to support up to that speed I am not sure what will happen. Maybe a value = 1 would be better. The DWORD dot11SupportedRateMask should be kept at = 1 since this is the supported rate for .11b devices which would not exceed 11Mbps.
Also the modulation scheme for speeds more than 11Mbps for G devices are different from B devices, so hardware support is required. Unless the 818 already has hardware support for G... maybe someone can confirm this.

My dot11SupportedRateMask Dword is 9. Does it really affect the speed or performance? I tried surfing via wifi and I didn't experience any problem. And also do i need to create dot11SupportedRateMaskG Dword=8 to enhance the wifi performance? My Dopod 838 pro also don't have the dot11SupportedRateMaskG parameter.

Your settings is 9. Is that the setting from the factory or have you tweaked the settings before? My from factory settings is = 1. This is strange then if it is true because this setting changes the maximum connection speed of the device. I think any setting 8 or more indicates all speeds.
Also if both are factory settings then these dopods 838 pros are shipped with different settings. That is why I was suggesting that we post our settings to compare. May learn something...

I just purchased the Dopod 838 Pro and i am having problem setting the wireless from B to G.
It wont work .
Default dot11SupportedRateMaskB is 1 and i already compile dot11SupportedRateMaskG =8 but the connection to internet seem to be very slow
I had instaslled Wi-Fi Companion and found out that the max speed i managed to get is 2mbps

1) i've create a new value of dot11SupportedRateMaskG of value 8.. do i have to delete away the default dot11SupportedRateMask of value 1.? or i can just leave it there?
2) Can i connect to either B or G router when i set it to dot11SupportedRateMaskG of value 8?
thanks
