Found the registry to reassign the 2 soft keys of Dopod 838. If you try on other PPC, please let us know if it works too.

Left Key

[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Today\Key\112]
@="Left"
Open="\Windows\MyApp.exe"

Right Key

[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Today\Key\113]
@="Right"
Open="\Windows\MyApp.exe"

can I assign "new Message" on the soft keys? if yes, please advise. Using Imate Kjam....similar to dopod 838. Please advise.

nope, you can't assign New SMS...the closest you can go to is to open up the Inbox...command line is \Windows\tmail.exe, then click on New to compose a new SMS...

perhaps u can try this.

Start notepad on your PC and and paste e following:
20#"\Windows\tmail.exe" -service "SMS" -to "" -body ""

Save it as (shortcut name).LNK.
Transfer e shortcut to your phone.
Lastly, set the softkey to call e shortcut.


It works for my smartphone..

Err.. sorry, i don't have any idea because im not using a 838 myself.
It just happened tt the registry tweak works for my smartphone.

works just fine...

1. copied the Messaging link and renamed it to NewSMS.lnk in Resco.
2. Went into shortcut properties and saw that it had <MSINBOX>
3. Just added the string < -service "SMS" -to "" -body ""> and it works fine...

found another way to skin the cat...

now the shortcut reads <MSINBOX -service "SMS" -to "" -body "">

Just place it (after extracting it from the RAR archive) into your Windows folder. After that a icon appears on the 2nd tab of your settings

Heya louis thanks for this great lil' app, works fine on the Pro, only 1 incy wincy gripe, it doesn't allow you to change the reflected name, as it takes the shortcut's name... Like Agenda Fusion.lnk becomes Agenda Fusion.... with the windows registry tweaking you can get it reflect any name you want....

Tested on my M600 but I guess should be the same for 838 if we are talking about the two keys. To change the name, You need to add SMS in the "default".

but strange thing is i cant find the registry for the "right" side soft key. As in under "Key" there's only "112" but no "113".

how do i go about it? create it?

only have 112 also and no 113 on my 838P

using 838Pro...my window/start button key on the 838P is not working.....how to get it back?....strange thing is it will only work if I'm running WisBar

if you are running wisbar, and then exit it, the key will not work as it has been taken over by wisbar and it's not revert back when you unload wisbar.

If you want to use it, either uninstall wisebar, or Soft reset and make sure you do not run wisbar. The moment you run wisbar, the only way to use start key si to soft-reset (and not run wisbar)

If u r not too sure on the reg tweaking, i suggest that u use tweak2k2 to do it coz is using a simple interface. I use that too. very user friendly s/w.

Else if u tweak your reg wrongly, u might face more prob. (",)

Thanks for the tip. It works on my O2 atom running WM6, however with a slight twist. My registry reads:

[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Today\Keys\112] (instead of Key)
Default="New SMS"
Open="\Windows\newSMS.LNK"

Maybe it works for those who are using WM6 also??

You guys should just use the WM5 new menu software. Very good.
