Not sure if this works for other WM5 devices but for Eten M600, one can map the software buttons to the hardware buttons. Just go to Start->Setting->Buttons, Select one of the hardware buton and select from the dropdown list. You should see <leftsoft> and <rightsoft>. Map them to the hardware button will do.
