With a recent splurge of new-generation Pocket PC Phone models (with latest Windows Mobile 5.0 operating systems) emerging in the local market, potential buyers are simply spoilt for choice. PPCSG put one such upcoming black and mean model, the ETEN M600 to the test. Is this another "Hi, Bye" Pocket PC Phone or is it a really a hidden gem worthy of keeping? Read on to find out!

Design:

General Outlook:
[attachmentid=4546]
For starters, the fact that the ETEN M600 is black alone makes it aesthetically appealing; its mostly matted finishing with some acrylic black gives it a sturdy but stylish look. Though it is slightly thicker than its miniature counterparts at 22mm (O2 XDA Atom is 18.5mm and O2 XDA II Mini is 18.1mm; only Dopod 838 is larger at 23.7mm), that with a textured back works to its advantage and makes the ETEN M600 a more appropriate and comfy device to hold than devices like a "slippery" O2 XDA II Mini.

Stylus:
[attachmentid=4547]
One unique aspect of the ETEN M600 is its unconventionally large and considerably thick telescopic stylus (see styluses picture above, from top: ETEN M600, O2 XDA IIi and O2 XDA II Mini) that is spectacularly refreshing to use. At a cute 82mm when retracted, it can extend fully to an amazing 118mm. By comparison, the styluses for the O2 XDA IIi and the O2 XDA II Mini measure 107mm and 90mm respectively and are a lot thinner. For those who think 'Size doesn’t matter' when it comes to styluses, wait till you try this one!

Buttons:
[attachmentid=4548]
There isn’t much to rave about here; ETEN M600 has its buttons strategically positioned like most of other Pocket PCs', except that its reset button is located at its side.

[attachmentid=4549]
Nonetheless, its minuscule directional-pad does need some work. At about only the size of a Singaporean 10-cent coin, gaming on an ETEN M600 is exceedingly unpleasant, unless you possess some freak-like and pencil-thin fingers.

Cradle:
[attachmentid=4550]
There is no disputing the fact that the ETEN M600’s circular sync cradle is a thing of beauty. Other than allowing an ETEN M600 to be showcased prominently, the cradle can charge a spare battery and even has a little "stylus-stand" notch to allow users to "dock" their stylus too. It makes perfect sense when you consider that the stylus is sited below for the ETEN M600.

Carrying Case:
[attachmentid=4551]
The ETEN M600 fits perfectly into the accompanying and normal-looking carrying case. Although it is more of belt-clip type of leather case, its hand-strap allows the device to be conveniently hand-carried while being protected.

Performance:

Processor:
As previously said, the ETEN M600 employs a Samsung S3C 2440 400 MHz processor, whose listed clock speed does not do it justice. Recent benchmarking tests showed that it outperformed a Dopod 838 and even a 520MHz Dopod 900.

Screen Display:
Other than the usual, 2.8” QVGA, 240 x 320 pixels and 65,536 colors, ETEN M600 supports a LTPS TFT-LCD screen. In plain English, the deal is that TFT (Thin Film Transistor) LCD screens made using LTPS (Low Temperature Poly Silicon) technology have much improved aperture ratios and therefore enhanced screen brightness. Another significant aspect of LTPS TFT-LCDs is that they consume less power, which in turn contributes to the ETEN M600 having a longer battery life.

Camera:
[attachmentid=4553]
The camera is a SXGA, which is still of a 1.3MP resolution. As in other 1.3MP cameras, plenty of lighting is essential to take good pictures using the ETEN M600, regardless of flash or no flash. Still, pictures taken with an ETEN M600 do appear brighter. One interesting thing is that its camera application comes with a good number of large icons on its borders; probably designed for one-handed operation.

What's even more interesting, especially for employees in the Singapore Armed Forces or in other "sensitive" workplaces, is that there will be a "camera-less" version of the ETEN M600 at S$50.00 off its regular counterpart's retail price. For those who buy an ETEN M600 with camera, but later decide to remove its camera hardware, removal is also possible for a similiar sum of S$50.00.

Battery life:
[attachmentid=4554]
The ETEN M600 spots a 1440mAh Li-Ion battery, which on paper promises:
- Talk-time: 3.5 to 4 hours.
- Standby: 150 to 200 hours.
- Pocket PC usage: 10 to 15 hours.

Still, Pocket PC battery lives depend largely on battery usage and as such, vary from individual from individual. Personally, this author’s daily Pocket PC usage pattern is as follows:
- Phone Talk-Time Duration: estimated 1.5 to 2 hours per day.
- SMS Dosage: estimated 20 SMS-es sent/received per day.
- Bluetooth 'On' Duration: estimated 12 hours per day.
- Wi-Fi 'On' Duration: estimated 1 hour per day.
- Applications Usage Duration: An assortment of system-monitoring, information, internet, music, and gaming applications for about 1.5 to 2 hours per day.

To surmise, the ETEN M600 still had 29% of juice left after almost 2 full days of usage and we dare say that this result comfortably outperforms the batteries of the O2 XDA II Mini and the O2 XDA IIi.
Aficionado
Conclusions:

What’s Hot in ETEN M600:
- All-round performer with robust specifications.
- Brilliant LTPS TFT-LCD display screen.
- Excellent battery life.
- Enhanced phone functions including new dialler interfaces.
- SDIO/SD/MMC.
- Very good-sized telescopic stylus.
- More affordable pricing.

What’s Not in ETEN M600:
- No mini-USB connector for sync cable.
- Very small directional-pad button.
- No audio gateway profile with its Microsoft Bluetooth stack.
- No infrared-red options at all.
- No integrated QWERTY keyboard.

With some concurrently overpriced Pocket PC Phones out there, the ETEN M600 is definitely value for money at an expected S$1,138.00 retailing soon at stores (online ordering = S$1,083.00). Moreover, it is hard not to note its strong all-round specifications like WM5.0 OS, speedy Samsung processor, integrated Wi-Fi, quad-band GSM, Bluetooth 1.2 and its useful bundled applications. More radically, its LTPS TFT-LCD display ensures enhanced brightness and paradoxically longer battery life too.

Aesthetics-wise, rest assured that its blackness and small size easily makes the ETEN M600 a head-turner. We know our evaluation unit is.

My old ipaq cradle used to have 2 slots for stylus! I would agree that the cradle is a beauty, looking at the picture a long, defintely better when the Eten is docked.

Bro choochor,

The other option to charge is to just use the mains power adaptor in conjunction with the accompanying sync USB cable, but thats a little messy in my opinion.

Bro beachbumjon,

ETEN is made in Taiwan, but it isn't by super PPC manufacturer, HTC (the major manufacturer for most PPCs for vendors like O2, Dopod, i-Mate, etc and even big PPC players like HP and Dell).

HI!
i was wondering how messy it can be.....and i found the accessories for m500, if
they are the same as m600, it can really be quite a mess (an extra USB flat head
cable hanging). to illustrate, see the picture. the power cord will have to be attached
to the part pointed at the arrow

PS: how to attach picture? confused.gif

The audio jack connector on the device is 2.5mm, which means most would have to get a 2.5mm-to-3.5mm converter if they are to use "normal" earphones/headphones on the ETEN M600.

If u are talking in terms of bundled software, ETEN packs a mean package of cool applications. O2 Plus is notorious for being buggy anyway.

nice phone there...
only thing i dislike about the phone is the stylus (retactable)
same as my motorola E680...
as time goes by... the retactable catch will loosen up.. and it will start (self extending) thats for my E680.. and thats y motorola offer 2 stylus in a set u buy.
other then that.. i see no reason thats stopping me to buy the phone....

im planning to get my refund from AAA on my O2 Atom and settle on da Eten though. i wonder. anybody with me?

well i ask trends whether if they can bundle a SD card along @ 1GB - 90 (i think abit ex) and a bt headset along with it and see how much.

hi all! I don't mean to burst everyone's excitement over the M600.

But have you seen the M500 which is exactly the same construction as the new M600 (but now it is in black color). The overall built and feel of the M500 is poor and squeeky. This means when you click any of the button, you'd feel the casing somehow not as solid as the xda mini. the reason a lot of people like the xda mini is because of the solid contruction of the phone (plus the metal finish). I know this for a fact becasue when I had actually hands-on comparison on both the xda mini and Eten m500, the M500 really looks ugly (that is why it is selling cheaper.)
Here a link where it agrees with me.
http://www.mobile-review.com/pda/review/eten-m500-en.shtml

If i were you, i wouldn't cancel that pre-order of the xda atom which is clearly the better deal. Yeah, you only pay 1138 for the M600, you also get the poor built. Don't be fooled by cheaper prices "You always get what you pay for."

Also remember that high price is also good because this means exclusivity. If the 8800 was sold for a mere $250, where's the fame in that? Just like what happenend to the RAZR V3 from S$1000 (which only a few privilege people have) and now down to (S188 with plan) which everyone have nowadays.

I did not buy either M500(S$900) and xda mini (the camera is really fugly). I am planning to get my new Xda Atom come this February!

well there is something call Showroom. Head down to the place and test the product. This is M600 by the way and no point talking about M500. It could be due to that reason u mentioned that prompt them to come up with this new M600 model. Test the product first before u make your judgement and u might end up with a ETEN

Eten should also consider to place their logo elsewhere or make it smaller... darn that logo is a turn off :)

I guess this why branding works in a very brand concious singapore. grin.gif

hmm,, u basing your comments on a m500 (old unit) compared to an atom which no one locally has tested before.... confused.gif
i was at trendsmobile yesterday to test the m600, i was very very impressed. build quality certainly looks good to me. its matt finish is definitely more desirable than the "plasticky fingerprint magnet casing" the atom has. well, beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.
i'll most probably be getin the etn but would prefer to wait to test the atom for myself to be absolutely sure. its best to have a hands on before you comment. grin.gif

What I meant was design wise, M500/M600 is not good. It's fugly still. hehe
It looks real nice in photos but when you see the real thing.
The specs is very good, even the additional apps are even better, the phone itself is fugly. And if I'm going to buy something more than a thousand dollar, i'll make sure it looks darn good, 'cause lets face who want to bring soemthing fugly everyday? sneaky.gif

We are not talking the specs-wise here. We are discussing the design/build of the phone. Why shouldn't i compare it with the M500, IT IS EXACTLY THE SAME DESIGN WITH A BLACK COLOR AND A MATT FINISH. confused.gif Am I right?

The pictures looks good in the internet, but when its in real life, hell, its fugly!

Let me ask, why is xda mini more popular than ETENM500, and we all know the M500 specs is far superior than the xda mini? Because DESIGN is always an important factor. It tells a lot about the person using it. cool.gif

I have been using the M500 for 8 months and my set doesnt creak a bit,nor do I find it fugly. I find the mini very fugly tongue.gif
Neither am i dissappointed by the feel of the phone.. I have also dropped it 5-6 times on hard concrete and it hasnt split or cracked.

Tyler to each his own....u may find a particular girl very good looking while the other may find her ordinary.....same with PPC designs.

Whoever finds the eten m600 good looking will buy it whether u like it or not.

By the way M500 is a winner of the european design award .I hope that convinces you that you have a bad taste in design whistle.gif

I not telling people not buy it, its just my opinion. And apparently this european Web site agrees with me. The specs and functionalities are very good but the designer was sleeping on the job i guess.

To think I almost bought the M500 basing on the internet pics last october. The specs really got me sold.
