www.expansys.com.sg which most of us would say is notorious for overpricing Pocket PCs and other such devices is advertising the Qtek 9000, which is the Qtek equivalent of the universal at SGD1634.95

*

a bit ot here, but expansys says that stock has reached their warehouse and will be shipping within two days. anyone taking the plunge with expansys to get a black qtek 9000 for $250 cheaper?
xtemujin
Qtek 9000 price: S$1,634.95
Fedex S&H: S$35
Fedex GST paperwork charge IIRC: S$10
GST: S$1634.95 x 5% = S$1716.70
Total: S$1716.70 + S$35 + S$10 = S$1 761.70

Savings: S$1 888 - S$1 761.70 = S$126.3

BTW, you have to go down to the FEDEX centre to pay for your GST charges.

Even with the shipping and handling charges, expansys price is cheaper than the Dopod.

No worries bro. FEDEX will send you the GST bill one week later. You can also pay the GST by using AXN machine and credit card.

My main concern now is if the set is sim lock..talking about Qtek 9000
amadeus
For those guys planning to bring in Sim unlocked sets such as the Exec, aren't you worried about having to pay for service at Dopod since there's no local warranty?

Dylas
i think u buy Exec, Dopod won't even repair for you .. u have to try your luck at O2 ..
Berzerky
No Dopod will not support at all. But at $1200/- for an Exec, I won't mind pack my Exec and send via postal for repair in UK.It's still cheaper than Dopod after the delivery charges smile.gif

Darn, its dissappointing to read about this news on a monday morning sowwy.gif

But at least it has helped me make a decision and refrain from buying a Dopod 900 grin.gif

I think I'll keep my wallet for that xBox 360 and stick with my Mini for a bit longer. Well, till other 3G PPC devices are available or Dopod prices its products for the not-so-executive and not-so-rich market. tongue.gif

Hi All!
It was indeed cool to meet all your folks! But If you read the column on www.brighthand.com about one company to rule them all! Well you guys maybe feeding the trend and the price.
That means HTC and friend DOPOD has monopoly of the market, remember when Microsoft has monopoly what does it do ? It dictates the price and that is why they are "arrogant" in their pricing and little may care attitude towards the feeling of pricing.

Cheers
Hunter

That really very expensive ....
gadgetkid2004
It does look like a last minute decision to raise the prices for the two devices 'cause Weekend Today reported the recommended retail prices for both devices to be S$1,288 & $1,788. For the much sought after Universal (O2 Executive) at S$1,888, it is hard for one to justify especially if it is even more expensive than a Centrino Dell laptop at S$1,466! sowwy.gif

i think if you check expansys, you'll need to send back to them during the 1 year warranty. well, you need to take arisk if you wanna save ~180 dollars. wacko.gif

No worth the risk given the small price differential. confused.gif

When I first handled the 900 at last Friday's PPCSG gathering at Microsoft, I realised how big the unit was. I realised that actually, because there is now a keyboard inside, the unit could have been just as large as the screen, instead of wasting the space around the screen. Either that, or increase the size of the screen to the full size of the unit.

just curious... when O2 mini 1st came out, i think the price is ard $1200, with a Wi-Fi card, it turns to be almost the same as the O2 Xda2 right? so the price for the 838 shouldn't be diff much from a O2 mini + Wi-Fi card right?

actually i'm much concern with the warranty issue, if there's any...

G4, there other things like the processor ... that make 1500 not very worth it ...
G4
oh... just saying the diff in price of O2 mini+Wi-Fi maybe the same as 838 with built-in Wi-Fi...

I guess if they price it at 1288 ... to compensate the slow processor, there will be alot of people rushing for it ...

excuse me, but I do not understand all the hype over an expensive toy. it is not fast, bulky and the battery does not last. once u play with it for a month or so, I think one will most probably get bored with it. is $1888 worth to spend to get 1 month of kick? please don't take credit just to get this toy. really not worth it!
Dylas
twosix, i think they discussing on the Dopod 838 .. 1488 ...
twosix
the subject title includes the dopod 900 as well.
Jack Dulouz
think i'll rather head to HK for an upgrade for my Mini whistle.gif

Oh .. i thought the not fast is Dopod 838 ..
afhstingray
its a toy to most of us here, but to some people its a tool which the time saved etc is worth more than the price premium that is paid. Thats the whole purpose of having a product line, every product has to fill a niche. To someone like me, who spends more time travelling than most people, its probably very worth it. You may argue tht a laptop+ mobile phone is cheaper, but you won't understand until you have had to use this device in the way im referring to. The ease is worth it....now.....i just wish they would iron out all the stupid bugs :S
I agree however that its not fair that its more expensive in singapore than other regions......i think they are taking advantage of their monopoly. if a company did that here in the uk, they would be investigated bu the office of fair trade;;;

right, so do all the guys here agreed with the price of $1488 for a PPC phone+keyboard+better camera+better BT? for me maybe still... ... o...k... provided that the support is good, and can use Skype. btw, is Skype tested on the 838?

We've discussed this subject at length.

Let us move on and just keep a look out how the Dopod marketing department will market it in the coming months.

What's the deal with the PPCSG MO, go or no go ?

TIA.
G4
very much agreed with that too. please include the 838 as well in the possible MO, 900 is just too big for me.

Dopod has not got back to us on the Mass Order. As mentioned previously, even if a MO is in place, it will take place after the product is available on the market. Currently, PPCSG is not actively pursuing a MO due to the volatile pricing strategy we have witnessed. It would be unthinkable if Dopod adjusts the pricing in the near future and members may be at a loss as the price differential from the MO savings may be less than the adjusted price in future.

Cheewee I support your viewpoint. Let's wait and see first. I hope the folks on this forum are not too impatient to chase the latest products. If you REALLY need it for your work, fine. Otherwise, please spend wisely, save wisely.
Dylas
one more week plus and we will see Dopod 900 and 838 in all major ... wonder how will be the 2 devices sales ...

Hope no one buy and they lower their pricing .. !!!

If none of them visit PPCSG, there wouldn't have been any interactions between Dopod and PPCSG in the first place.
