If you wish to have RSS feeds converted to webpages so you can view them in internet browsers like PIE, NetFront, etc, you can check out this thread for more info. You can also make use of these converted RSS feeds to sync using AvantGo, Mobile Favorites, Sunnysoft World Off-Line, etc

Here are some mobile-friendly sites/pages that you can add to your AvantGo/WOL/Mobile Favorites channel:

MediaCorp TV Guide (Link Depth=2)
StarHub Cable TV Weekly Schedules (Link Depth=2)
StarHub Cable TV Schedules for 2 days (Link Depth=2)
Straits Times Interactive (Link Depth=2)
Business Times News
Singapore Lottery (Link Depth=2)
SG Weather (Link Depth=1/2)
HardwareZone Price Guides (Link Depth=3)
PPCSG - Hardware News (Link Depth=1/2)
PPCSG - Software News (Link Depth=1/2)
PPCSG - Buzz (Link Depth=1/2)
PPCSG - Press Releases (Link Depth=1)
SG Movie Schedules (Link Depth=2)

Do note that for WOL, channel depth (Max. Level) is one level more than link depth, i.e. it's inclusive of the index page.

Anybody have any other recommended AvantGo channel or mobile-friendly site for offline synchronisation? Please post here wink.gif

Here's a guide for WOL users. Most parts of this guide also apply to Mobile Favorites or AvantGo users.

If you wish to subscribe/view a RSS Feed in WOL, i.e. do not wish to use RSS Reader, you can make use of certain websites to help you convert the RSS Feed to a HTML webpage, where you can add to your WOL channel.

Convert RSS Feeds to HTML Webpage:
- RSS to Mobile-Friendly Webpage (some feeds my not work well)
- RSS2HTML (work well with more feeds, but not optimized for small screens)

If the webpage is in a foreign language and u wish to translate to English, you can also make use of Online Translators to translate the webpage before you add it to your WOL channel.

Online Translators:
- Babelfish
- Google

The webpage is not well-optimized for small screen? Try Skweezer to optimize the webpage before u add it to your WOL channel.

Sometimes, u may need to use a combination of these tools, e.g:
Case 1: RSS Feed is not in English
- Step 1: Convert RSS Feed to HTML webpage
- Step 2: Translate the output page
Case 2: Webpage is not optimized and is not in English
- Step 1: Translate to English
- Step 2: Optimize page using Skweezer

Do you know u do not need to launch WOL to go to the index page? And do you know WOL works with ftxPBrowser? You can launch PIE/ftxPBrowser and type "wol:index" into the address bar.

You can add the WOL index page to your Mobile Favorites so that u can go to the page quickly & conveniently, rather than launching WOL program to do so. Alternatively, you can add the link to your PIE/ftxPBrowser start page, e.g.

CODE
<a href="wol:index">WOL Index Page</a>
vicott
Do you have ChannelNewsAsia as your Mobile Favorite/WOL/AvantGO channel? Did you realise that setting the link depth to 2 (max level of 3 in WOL) results in file size of over 1MB? That is very unusual because all the pages are supposed to be optimized for small screens and do not have much images. The actual file size should have been around 300-400MB instead.

Where did the extra 600KB or more come from? They are a result of bad HTML coding of the webpages which lead to WOL (or others) following "hidden" links to the actual site.

Well, do not fret. I have just written a script to optimize the ChannelNewsAsia page. Simply continue using link depth of 2 (max level of 3 in WOL) and allow link to external site of link depth 1. The link for the optimized page is here.

More customized & optimized webpages I've coded below...

Optimized Webpages:
ChannelNewsAsia (Max Level = 3)
Achieve-IT! (Max Level = 1)
Yahoo SG: Movie Showtimes (Max Level = 2)

Optimized and Translated Webpages:
Pocketpcitalia.com News (Max Level = 1)
PocketPCParadise (Max Level = 1)
PocketPC Universe (Max Level = 1)

Optimized Webpages converted from RSS Feeds:
CNetAsia Reviews - Mobile Phones (Max Level = 2)
PPCSG News (Max Level = 2)
PocketPCAddict News (Max Level = 2)

Others
StarHub CableTV Schedules

Do note that link depth to be set for Mobile Favorites or AvantGo is 1 level less than the Max level. Max Level is used for WOL. Happy synchronising & staying updated with the news! smile.gif

Some Registry Tweaks:
Change the default storage location for Avantgo
Disabling GPRS and MMS
Changing temp internet files directory

Alternatively, you can also use Tweaks2k2.Net to change the location of temp internet files, cookies, history to Storage ROM or Storage Card.

Another useful registry tweak is to enable PIE to be identified as IE5 or IE6. It can also be done easily using Tweaks2k2.Net

If you are looking for a simple way to create a Start Page (Home) for your browser, you can check out this thread.

If you are looking for "Save Image As..." feature in your browser, you can try 3rd party PIE enhancements or 3rd party Web browsers. Check out the post above for the recommendations & links. smile.gif

If you are having problems surfing using WiFi connection, the following troubleshooting steps apply:
1) On the device, go to "Connections" settings and go to the "Advanced" tab. Click on "Edit" and check that all the checkboxes in the "Proxy Settings" page are unticked. If it does not work, continue to next step.
2) Tap on "Select Networks" and try changing the first dropdown option to "My ISP".
3) If you have problems with GPRS connection because you changed the default connection to "My ISP", please refer to this post and this thread for the manual GPRS config guide.

If you have problems connecting to internet using ActiveSync connection, do refer to this post.

So anybody else have other internet or java related guides/tips/links to share? Post them here. smile.gif

WOL is Sunnysoft World-Offline, which is another means to download and sync news for offline viewing. If you use AvantGo, you will need to login to the website and create a custom channel.

Actually, that wasn't the "original" page. The link I provided was a page I scripted. It grabs content from the "original" page and optimizes it for small screen, while removing all other redundant information and formatting. This is the link that I am referring to. And yes, the link depth is 1 for use with AvantGo. smile.gif

If it re-directs you to another page, it means that u have entered the URL incorrectly. so did you add the full link as it is as under a new custom channel in AvantGo? confused.gif

Here's the link for the custom AvantGo channel I created.

BTW, this webpage has been rather unstable for the past few mornings/afternoons. I have no idea why this is so. Maybe this is why you get the "error". You can check on the PC whether the links for the "main" page is really bringing you to the movie schedules page, or just a blank/error page.

I just figured out actually the "old" GPRS settings can also be used on 3G phones. So, there is no need for the extra modem command, proxy server or port. But this new modem connection has be created under the "My ISP" setting.

Can you try visiting the page rather than using AvantGo on the PPC to confirm? I have been using this page to sync for quite some time but do not have such problems. It should not be re-directing to the main site in the first place, unless it's AvantGo doing something funny.

Mine is 405KB, but I'm not using the default page and settings. I notice that the webpages are poorly coded and WOL will end up linking up all the non-optimised pages as well. The sync size could well go beyond 1MB quite easily. If you are interested in the tweaked version that I am using, you can try this link.

There are 2 factors involved for streaming:
1) Protocol, e.g. "mms://", "rtsp://", etc.
2) The media type, e.g. 3GP

3GP support on WMP in WM5 wasn't very consistent as in some devices can open 3GP files while some can't. As for the protocol, WMP only supports "mms://", "http://" and maybe "https://". However, "rtsp://" is gaining popularity especially with thep presence of YouTube mobile. Unfortunately, only HTC's Streaming Media player supports this protocol. Nokia, on the other hand, has quite a number of their phones already supporting "rtsp://".

Vicott,
Thanks for the prompt reply. I was trying to get the football feed via IE, so what you just explained is all greek to me. I have an upgraded WM6 838pro. What software and settings do I need to enable the streaming?

Check on your desktop if the streaming link starts with "mms://", "rtsp://" or "http://". Generally, the WMP supports only "mms://" and "http://" for WMV files. On some devices, e.g. Dopod 838 Pro, I'm not sure if WMP supports streaming 3GP files as well.

I have also been unsuccessful in using my Win XP's bluetooth to use the phone as a modem as well. Are the instructions here out of date already? Thanks!!

You can use the autoconfig to configure for SingTel GPRS or follow the manual config settings for IDEAS Internet in this post. Actually, you should have applied BBOM subscription for the phone line you were already carrying if you only intend to surf using the phone to save you the hassle of switching SIM cards.

Hi cyberazi,
Is it your both line under singtel?
If yes, There is one way u can try. (but need to pay)
There is a sevice that singtel have, u can ask them to add in the BBOM to your 3G line (which what I'm doing now) so you will have 2 sim card but both can be use for BBOM and calling. mthly have to pay around $10+

but just be abit careful, because when you didn't say clearly, the bill usually gives you a surprise!
