hi Minicooper,

firstly i would like to say, no questions is stupid...if you are in doubt, ask..

to install a program in your XDA II Mini, firstly, get hold of the program...in this case, Symantec Anti Virus for PDA, run the file and it will prompt you to install it in your XDA II Mini...you will be prompt to select Main Memory, Storage and Storage Card for installation of this software...depends on where you want to install...normally for most applications, its installed in the Storage Card residing in your XDA II Mini...select Storage Card and its will begin to install into you device....
crypt
just to add, some programs require that you install them in main memory, while most other programs aren't too fussy.

other than that, installation of s/w is fairly simple!

enjoy!!

Unsure which version of the software to download/install? What's ARM, SH3 and MIPS? Read this....

QUOTE(vicott @ Feb 19 2004, 11:37 PM)
For Pocket PC 2000 devices, there were StrongARM-based iPAQs, SH3-based Jornadas and MIPS-based Cassiopeias

When Pocket PC 2002 came, there was only StrongARM and some X-Scale amongst the last of Pocket PC 2002 devices.

For Windows Mobile 2003 (and above), most devices are using a X-Scale processor (Intel PXA 25x/26x/27x, etc) or Samsung StrongARM (S3C2410/S3C2440, etc) processor or TI OMAP processor.

As a general rule of thumb, programs written for the StrongARM processor SHOULD work with X-scale and TI OMAP as well, unless stated otherwise in the compatability list

Here comes a detailed guide to installing softwares. Basically, there are 3 types of files:
- If you are able to run the program on your PC (usually exe or msi file), follow Part (I).
- if it's a CAB file, go to part (II).
- if it is an exe file which u cannot run on PC (error that says it is not a valid Win32 application), go to part (III).

If you see a WinZIP icon, please check the file extension. It may be a ZIP file or a CAB file. If it's a ZIP file, you should unzip it and see what's inside. If it's a CAB file, you should not open it using WinZIP (or other ZIP programs). Instead, you should follow the instructions in part (II).

QUOTE
(I) Windows Installer:
1) Connect your PPC to PC via ActiveSync
2) Run the exe file on your PC
3) Follow the instructions.
4) A pop-up box will ask you whether you wish to install to default location.

Note: The popup box will not appear in WM5. The prompt will be on the Pocket PC instead.

5a) Choose YES to install to main memory
6a) Installation will proceed. Look at your PPC screen if theer are any additional instructions.
7a) When asked whether to replace files on PPC, it is ok to choose NO (except for software upgrades). Choosing NO may save u alot of trouble when dealing with VB (Visual Basic) programs because some newer files may be replaced by older files.

5b) Choose NO if you do not wish to install to main memory
6b) From the drop-down menu, u can choose which location to install your software to.
7b) same as 7(a).

QUOTE
(II) CAB File:
A) Install to Main Memory
1) Transfer the CAB file to PPC.
2) Open File Explorer on PPC & search for that cab file
3) Tap/double tap it to run
4) Follow instructions. It may ask u whether to replace files on PPC.
5) It is better not to replace files on the PPC unless it is a software upgrade.

Note: CabInstl is not required if you wish to install a CAB file to the Storage Card on a WM5 device. In WM5, there will always be a prompt asking you where to install the software.

B) Install to Custom Folder, e.g. Storage Card/ROM
1) Download CABinstl
2) copy the exe file (for CABInstl) to ppc
3) copy your CAB file to ppc also
4) open file explorer on PPC to locate CABInstl
5) Run CABInstl
6) press the ".CAB" button.
7) find your cab file
8) press the "Path" button.
9) specify the folder to install your program to
10) Press Install button. Done!

QUOTE
III) Exe file (cannot run on PC) for PPC:
1) copy exe file to PPC
2) open file explorer and locate the exe file
3) run the exe file (No installations needed!)
4) You may wish to create a shortcut yourself.
5) To create shortcut, inside file explorer, tap & hold on the exe file
6) select "Copy"
7) go to "Windows\Start Menu\Programs" or any subfolder
8) select "paste as shortcut"

u shld be transferring the whole cab file to the Pocket PC, not the extracted contents. u shld not extract files from the cab archive using WinZIP/WinRAR, etc. do not confuse CAB file with ZIP file. look at the file extension carefully and u will know.

One very important note to all Pocket PC Phone users

Windows Mobile Pocket PC Phone and Smartphones are running 2 different editions of Windows Mobile OS. so please, do not try to install Smartphone applications to your Pocket PC Phone device. This is a common mistake made by many Pocket PC Phone users.
  • For WM2003/WM2003SE Pocket PC users, u should download/install the X-scale or ARM version of softwares.
  • For PPC2002 users, u should download/install the ARM version.
  • For PPC2000 users, iPAQs are using ARM, Jornadas are using SH3 and Casio is using MIP3.
  • Pocket PC users should not install Smartphone applications to their device, and also vice versa.

however, with Windows Mobile 5.0, Pocket PCs may be able to run Smartphone softwares, but not vice versa.

Bro spiteri,

U should first uncheck PocketZenPhone from your Start>Settings>Personal>Today>Items, before attempting to remove the application from the Start>Settings>System>Remove Programs.

Regardless, stuff like PocketZenPhone are unlikely to be removed cleanly without a hard-reset sowwy.gif.

Were u trying to run the EXE installer on the Pocket PC? The EXE installer is meant for Windows PC. So you have to run the installer on the PC while connected via ActiveSync.

If it's in ZIP, then you should extract it and see what its contents are. You have to make sure it is really a file with ZIP extension and not CAB extension. On most PCs, the icon for ZIP and CAB are the same which may cause confusion for many inexperienced PPC users.

The reason why I suggested that it would be better to choose "No" is because you might have replaced newer VB files with those that are of older versions. If this is the case, some of your previous VB programs may fail to work.

For WM5, you already have the choice to install programs to Storage Card even without the help of CabInstl. However, if you wish to install the program to a very specific folder, e.g. "\Storage Card\My Programs\Program Group 1\New Program\", then you will need the help of CabInstl.

You can try the CAB file instead. Download the CAB file, transfer to your Pocket PC, and run the CAB file from there.

On the download page, there is an option for Pocket PC 2002/2003 (ARM/PXA). That's the CAB file download.

Hi,

i just install SendContact SP2003.CAB yday on my Xphone II yday.
It is running on WM 2003 SE.

When i run the cab file, it just installs the software without asking me to choose whether i wanna install in main memory or storage card...

So, is it every software will be installed in main memory instead of storage card? can i choose the directory?

I am new to PPC and would like to find out some installation related stuffs. When I do a clean boot, by default, my PPC will install certain applications during setup and all these goes into my ROM. Is there anyway I can change the installation to my Storage Card instead? Thanks.

You will have to skip the auto installation process by soft resetting when the device is doung the auto software installation n after so unhide the extended ROM to reveal the CAB files n install the softwares to your designated location however not advisable as you do not know which CAB's for which app therefore suggest you leave it that way n let the system auto install for you.

You have to soft reset before the auto installation process. But you also have to make sure you choose the right time to skip the installation in case you missed some impt software.

ok... understand what u mean already... thanks...

What does CAB stands for???
John Teoh
In PPC, cab is like installer exe. After you double click, it will proceed to install the software into your PPC.

OK most of you guys probably already know this but for the benefits for noobs like me who are installing cab files for the first time, I did a search on Google and some were saying you HAVE to install cabinstl while others were saying you didn't.

From what I gathered, its only for earlier versions of Windows Mobile that you need to. I installed a cab file on my WM6 Pro device and it automatically asked for the location so yeah, don't have to for version 6.
julian_lim
hi all,
i tried installing a cab file on my eten x500+ but it says "there is no application with sunglobe.cab.run the application first, then open the file from within the application".can someone kindly advise me on how to install this fiel because i need chinese on my phone quite badly.thanks in advance.
lmf2501
Firstly go to HERE and download the ZIP file which contains the sunglobe CAB file to your desktop and unzip the file, inside you will see a CAB file. Extract the CAb file to your desktop and transfer it whole, without un-zipping or unrar-ing it, to your device via Activesync to ant location. After so just locate it in your device and tap to launch to install in your device's main memory, soft reset.

If still unable download CabInstl which will assist you to do so, ensuring to associate the CAB file option in the app so the app will detect the CAB file once you have click on the CAB file.
