quality and built of the keyboard is great!!

bought it at EDPOL at funan - they will provide a PPC driver for your PPC smile.gif
mingsect
that's good news.

how's the batt life of the xda2 when using infra keyboard ?
coromer
didn't notice any differnce in battery life, coz just typing for around 10 mins. The keyboard also uses 2 AAA size battries (included)

are you using any keyboard for your XDA2?
Firetrail
coromer,

Looking at the BH link, you meant the Palm Wireless KB for use with a PPC?

That's clever of 'Think Outside' to be able to do that!
coromer
yup Firetrail, Its actually a keyboard that Stowaway created for the Palm (with the Palm packaging). I got a shock when the person at Edpol showed it to me, on the demo unit...the keyboard is actually created by 'Think outstide" - makers of " Stowaway" keyboards, and the required ppcs drivers will be given to you when you buy from the shop.

works with the XDA2 very well!!

Lynx
This is great news...

Am I right to say that this is very similar to the original XDA2 IR keyboard?

Coromer, can u place this KB on your lap and type away? Or does it need a flat surface to work?
gavinloh
Does it mean that I need to put my XDA2 upside down since it's using infra-red?

Wonder when bluetooth's keyboard will be out?

Using it upside down is not necessary. just place it upright and it will pick up the IR from the top. there should be some receiver.

Will it work in landscape mode?? I've began my search.

what s/w are you using for enabling landscape mode? Appreciate your feedback on this.
nicnoel
If I remember correctly there's a software for viewing in landscape mode, but it works with the browser. Is there another type?
coromer
Lynx, the quality is the same as the original xda2 keyboard as it is made by the same co. Also, as it folds in half, its not advisable to put it on yr lap, unless u typr really softly...

the ir arm can be adjusted suit either landscape or vertical placement of the xda.

I saw the similarity of the Thinkoutside "Palm" and PocketPC keyboard and asked them the question on compatibility since they only sell the Palm keyboard in Singapore. Here's the reply. Note that the only issue is with the keycap layouts as indicated. I am waiting for the PocketPC version to arrive.

"I can process an order for you directly, It would be best for your PPC

OS PDA to have the Universal IR Keyboard we sell. The Palm IR Keyboard

is designed for the PALM OS only. There will be confusion for you with

the different keycap layouts.

Please find the attached Order form. You can fax it back to me TOLL FREE

to: 888-837-6748 or 408-551-0660.

You will need to check our website to double check the Part Number you

would like to purchase. http://www.thinkoutside.com

All packages will be shipped via Federal Express from Santa Clara, Ca,

95051. You may obtain a courtesy rate quote by going to Federal Express

Web Site. Federal Express rates are only a guide line, Think Outside

will make every effort to keep the shipping charges to a minimum."

hope the shops here carry the ppc version as they only carry the palm version.

actually either keyboard is compatible with both ppc and palm as they are software dependent.
gt
Maybe we should all mass order the ppc version from the US , get a discount and save on shipping cost too. Any interest?

I just took the plunge to get this palm version of the keyboard as recommended by the thread starter.

3 words to describe it:

"I love it"

bear in mind that portable keyboards generally do not feel right, especailly for its small comapct size, but this keyboard has full sized keys, which are even more comforatable to type on that my full sized computer keyboard. They belong to the class of very good quality keyboard from high end notebooks.

Those people who are worried by the keycaps for palm and ppc, all i can say is that you won't get confused about it cos you'll hardly use it anyway. the drivers are way cool and they basically make the ppc, in this case my xda2 even more productive than ever with the good old ALT TAB function as well. those who love keyboard shortcut keys will love using this keyboard.

Absolutely no regrets getting it at all.

One compalain that new users may have to get used to is the lack of the usual row of numbers on the top of the keyboard. they are still present but you'll have to press the blue function key to get them out. if you want the uusal symbols that you get when you hit shift and wadever key, you'll also have to adapt to pressing the right shift key and the symbol in green. But this left and right function keys is no an issue between the palm or ppc version, as both versions face the same problem.

Another issue i face is the awkward placement of the SHIFT and the / key. I would prefer the shift to be the last key instaed of the / key. In addition, the arrow and the DEL keys seem placed oddly as well. i would rather have the right arrow key be the last key instaed of the DEL being the last key.

In summary:

Get this if you want a cheap and very good quality keyboard and dont really mind the keycaps belonging to those of palm. but hey some of them do that same eg calendar, contacts. I love it... its been a long ime since i bought some tech stuff and be so utterly satisfied with them.

I rate this keyboard 10/10

btw i'm using this excellent keyboard to type this post grin.gif
Lynx
i am really enjoying this keyboard. especially so with nyditot screen rotation software. surfing web on the ppc is more bearable with a 640x480 lanscapre screen. word are still difficult to read on this screen though. i iwsh i had the toshiba screen grin.gif Today is a happy day for me. got w things going well for me on my ppc
gt
I will atest to Lynx praise for the keyboard. I was going to wait for the PocketPC version to be released here in Singapore but took the plunge yesterday and bought the Palm version from EDPOL. Challenger at Funan Centre sells the O2 PocketPC version for $149. I decided not to pay the extra $50 for the correctly named function keys on the keyboard since other than that, they are identical.

I have one question for Lynx though, I tried to use it on Landscape mode but the IR wand is a wee bit too short so the responsiveness is not as good because it is touching the top of the XDA II, so how do you get it to function?

Now I got to sell off my Pocketop that I have used only for a few times when I had the XDA I. The Pocketop KB is a pretty good and slim IR keyboad but unfortunately, I have waited long enough for the driver for XDA II. Any interest?

gt
Lynx
Thks GT for the reafirmation of the quality and usability of the PWK. wink.gif

As for the IR wand qn, It should just rest directly above the IR port of ur XDA2 and not vertically above the SD slot. Is that wad you are talking about? I don't have any problems using it in lanscape mode though. I found out that the stand at the back may be useless when you are typing on ur laps. just lay it down flat with the keyboard and its more comforatble angle to type and see. smile.gif

My other complain is that the PWK is boring grey colour. wish it was cool black grin.gif
coromer
glad Lynx and GT liked it... grin.gif did saw the one they sell at challenger, but wouldnt pay an extra 50 bucks just to get shortcut keys to those contacts and calender functions... maybe we could spray the outher casing silver though... grin.gif
